The Sign of Jonah

“For just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so shall the Son of Man be to this generation.”

How did Jonah become a sign to the Ninevites? The answer is simple. He was walking around the city when they heard that he had been swallowed by a great sea monster. The fact that the sea monster swallowed him out on the open ocean was not an unusual thing. Walking around the city 3 days later certainly was unusual. This became a sign. The fact that the sea monster vomited him onto the beach and he was alive!

Signs are often used by God to get people’s attention. You can deal with other religions or cults, or maybe just want nothing to do with God in the first place. You can, in your intelligence, deny the fact that a God is even possible. But then, something happens that’s just not possible. Something that opens the eyes of the unbeliever to see that there has to be a God. There is no other way that this just happened. That what signs are all about. They open up people’s hearts and the Holy Spirit starts to work on them. This is, by the way, the reason that most supernatural things happen in people’s lives while they are young in the Lord. When we grow up God expects us to live by faith. But I digress. Let’s get back on topic.

The sign of Jonah led the whole city to repent and have a heart change. Let’s forward now to Jesus. It was not unusual for people to be crucified and buried in those days. It happened every day. The sign was the same as Jonah. Not that the sea monster swallowed him, but that he was walking around in the city preaching the next day. The fish had vomited him! Jesus, being crucified and scourged was nothing unusual. Being placed in a grave was not unusual. In fact, that’s where the leaders of every other cult and false religion are today, in the grave! No! The grave couldn’t hold Him! The grave vomited Him out and He went into the city to preach for the next 40 days! That’s the sign! He’s alive and still speaks to us today!!!

Why the sign? Because God “does not wish for any to perish but for all to come to repentance” This is the truth that no one else in the world has! This is the sign for today! Jesus is alive!!! Spread the word! Tell the truth to all people! He’s getting ready to step out on the clouds and bring His church home. Let’s do our best to make sure that all the ones within our circle come to repentance. So what are you waiting for?? Time to get busy!!
